Robert Shewan has taught singing at all levels - elementary to professional - during a forty-year career as teacher, conductor and administrator, and is the author of Singing and the Brain - Developing Mental Concepts for Singing. He received degrees from Mansfield State University, Ithaca College and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. An active clinician and adjudicator, he has conducted master classes for professional singers in New York City and adjudicated for New York State School Music Association vocal festivals and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's Young Artists Competition. In the summers of 1998, 1999, and 2000, he taught voice at the Spoleto Vocal Arts Symposium in Spoleto, Italy.

The Roberts Wesleyan College Chorale, under his direction, became known for its unique choral sound and standard of excellence. The group has sung with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under David Zinman, Isaiah Jackson, Mitch Miller, Peter Bay, Daryll One, Mark Elder, and Christopher Seaman. In 1986 the Chorale sang in Carnegie Hall with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra under maestro Brad Keimach. Professional recordings of the Chorale include Mozart's Coronation Mass with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra on the Vox label; and CDs on the Albany label including The Choral Works of Anton Bruckner, The Music of Stephen Shewan, as well as choral music of Roy Harris, Leo Sowerby, and Randall Thompson.

The Fine Arts Division under Dr. Shewan's leadership grew from 25 members to well over 150, and has received full accreditation from both the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. He served as an evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music from 1975 to 1995.

Robert Shewan authored a book entitled Voice Training for the High School Chorus, published in 1973 by Parker Publishing Company, and an article on "Voice Classification" published in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Bulletin.
